Maisonette in Swiss Cottage

The composition of this maisonette flat in Swiss Cottage was as such that the main reception rooms and kitchen were on the entrance level, the upper level and the bedrooms and bathroom on the lower level; the lower level having the only access to the garden through the master bedroom. Vital to this project was the access to the garden directly from the main reception rooms from entrance level. This was achieved by extending the master bedroom to the rear on the lower ground floor creating a roof terrace above giving direct access from the kitchen to the garden via newly designed steel stairs. The front reception room was left in its original state with its original Victorian features. The kitchen at the rear was opened up to the back room to create a large open plan kitchen-diner to allow for a free flowing space. Full height internal doors and French doors express a grand feel. The neutral colours, i.e. white painted walls and oak flooring give a feel for large generous spaces. The badly presented existing rear elevation with security bars on all windows and doors were replaced with large toughened double glazed French doors allowing more light into the lower ground floor. The oddly proportioned garden shed at the far rear of the garden was replaced by a very simple elegant well detailed new timber garden kitchen with glazed sliding folding doors within the brick ruins with a bbq and external dining area. The main building remains in its existing London stock brickwork with the new rear extension smoothly rendered and painted white, to differentiate new from old.
